Announcing the Greystone Books Award in Indigenous Land Stewardship
VANCOUVER, BC–– Greystone Books is pleased to announce its contribution of $15,000 toward the establishment of the Greystone Books Award in Indigenous Land Stewardship at the University of British Columbia. The annual award will support students in UBC Forestry’s Bachelor of Indigenous Land Stewardship program who demonstrate a strong commitment to holistic and sustainable natural resource management. The first award will be available for the 2025/2026 winter session.
The Bachelor of Indigenous Land Stewardship program at UBC Forestry equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to address the complex challenges of managing natural resources, preparing them to address environmental challenges while honouring Indigenous science. The Greystone Books Award will provide vital financial support to students who are dedicated to advancing these principles, helping them achieve their academic and professional goals.
An independent trade book publisher based in Vancouver, Greystone has long supported environmental stewardship through its production practices and the contents of its published works. Acknowledging the environmental impact of the publishing industry, Greystone is actively working to reduce its ecological footprint through sustainable production practices. With an editorial focus on nature, the environment, science, and social issues, Greystone has published a range of books that advocate for sustainable land management, environmental action, and Indigenous-led movements.
This new award reflects Greystone’s dedication to fostering environmental and societal change by supporting the next generation of leaders in Indigenous land stewardship.
“We are proud to partner with UBC to support students who are passionate about stewarding the land in ways that honour cultural traditions and promote sustainability,” said Rob Sanders, Founding Publisher and CEO of Greystone Books. “By investing in Indigenous-led approaches to environmental stewardship, we hope to empower students to create meaningful change for communities and ecosystems alike.”
"With contributions like this from Greystone Books, students in the Bachelor of Indigenous Land Stewardship program will have the opportunity to further their studies and develop the skills needed to lead in sustainable land management, says Robert Kozak, Dean of UBC’s Faculty of Forestry. “We are thankful for their support in empowering the next generation of Indigenous land stewards."
UBC and Greystone Books share a common vision of fostering a deeper understanding of and respect for the environment. Together, they are committed to supporting students who aspire to lead the way in sustainable land management and environmental stewardship.
